UDY aka Underrated Distinct YouTuber is the online alias of YouTuber Sergio Mejia, who is known for his "Gold Digger" prank videos in which he assists people in ascertaining the loyalty of their partners by offering expensive items. He had also made a video titled Meet an Immigrant (Donald Trump Experiment) in response to Donald Trump’s derogatory comments against Mexicans, which was his most watched video for a long time.
Early Life
UDY attended Fullerton Union High School in Fullerton, California, from where he graduated in November 2014.
Career
UDY created his prank channel, Udsydefilms (later renamed to UDY Pranks and then to just UDY), on March 26, 2014. While UDY initially meant “Underrated Distinct YouTuber”, his YouTube banner currently shows “Underrated, Distinct & Young”. His first video on the channel, titled First Kiss Prank!, was uploaded in April 2014. The channel quickly became known for its prank video content, especially those in which he helped people find out if their lovers were loyal or “gold diggers”. He has been assisted in making videos by a crew that included him, his girlfriend Leslie Marie, as well as his friends and fellow social media influencers Denzel Crispy and Jay Rozier, while YouTuber Jasmine Gonzalez has featured in several of his prank videos. His videos have often led to arguments and even fistfights after the setup was revealed. He began posting on his Instagram profile, @sergiofromudy, on November 18, 2014. He posted a picture with music producer Michael Blakey in June 2019.
In response to then President Donald Trump’s controversial comments branding Mexican immigrants crossing the border as drug lords, rapists, and criminals, UDY, who is of Hispanic descent, decided to make the video Meet an Immigrant (Donald Trump Experiment) on July 5, 2015. In the video, he dressed in a bright orange jumpsuit with a red blindfold, handcuffs and chains tied around his ankles and stood next to a sign that read, “Meet an immigrant, do you really see me as a drug lord, rapist, criminal?” He further clarified that while he was not really trying to get across a message, he wanted to see who were supporting Trump. After the video went viral, he revealed in an interview with Telemundo that when his father was deported 10 years ago, he would visit him in a jail in Lancaster, California and see him in an orange jumpsuit similar to what he wore. Well aware of the plight of immigrant fathers, he saw through Trump’s labeling of immigrants as criminals, which prompted him to conduct the experiment.
Family Life
UDY, born as Sergio Daniel Mejia DeLaCruz, has an older brother named Diego, as well as two younger siblings. His father had come to the United States as an immigrant and was later deported. He flaunts the Guatemala Flag emoji on his Instagram bio, pointing to his Central American origin. He has three pet dogs named Kobi, Kylo, and Koda. He has been in a relationship with TikTok star Leslie Marie Moreno.
