Spanish-Norwegian YouTuber, TV and film personality, author, and comic artist Rubius shot to fame with his Skyrim gameplays and skits on his popular YouTube channel, elrubiusOMG. Over the years, he earned the tag of Spain’s most-subscribed YouTuber and is currently the third-ranked Spanish YouTube star globally. He has also been part of films and series and has penned books too.

Early Life

Rubius was born Rubén Doblas Gundersen and is originally from Mijas, Málaga, Spain. He has Spanish roots on his father’s side and Norwegian roots on his mother’s side. He is fluent in multiple languages, such as Norwegian, Spanish, and English.

His parents separated when he was 3, and he moved to Bergen, Norway, with his mother. There, his mother starting living in with a man named Hector, whom Rubius later described as The Godfather.

Not known to many, Rubius was diagnosed with ADHD at age 12. He later moved back to Madrid and completed his primary and secondary schooling there.

When he was 16, his parents separated again, and he moved to Norway to complete his studies. He later moved to Madrid again and joined a 3D modelling and animation course in Arteneo School.

Social Media Career

Rubius, also known as El Rubius or elrubiusOMG, was 16 when he began recording videos with comedic commentary for his friends and uploaded them on YouTube. He launched his first YouTube channel, elrubius, in 2006. The channel mostly featured his Skyrim gameplays. However, he later stopped posting on the channel due to copyright issues.

In December 2011, he launched his second YouTube channel, elrubiusOMG. The channel has since gained over 40 million subscribers. His first channel has now been renamed Rubius Z and has over 12 million subscribers.

In 2013, Rubius began posting chat roulette and Omegle videos. However, it was his gameplay of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which catapulted him to stardom and earned him 60,000 hits per week.

In October 2014, Rubius debuted in films with Torrente 5. The same year, he released the chart-topping book El Libro Troll. In February 2015, Rubius became the 1st Spanish-language YouTuber to gain 10 million subscribers.

He later became the 1st YouTuber from Spain to hit the 25-million-subscriber mark. In 2016, one of his tweets became the most retweeted tweet globally that year, with 1.3 million retweets.

In November 2017, he debuted on TV with the comedy series Televisión registrada. In 2018, Rubius appeared as the lead character in the anime series Virtual Hero. It was adapted from a comic book written by him. In October 2020, he debuted as a mentor on the reality show Top Gamers Academy. Currently, Rubius is the third most subscribed Spanish speaking YouTuber, just behind HolaSoyGerman and Fernanfloo.

Family Life

Rubius grew up with his younger step-sister named Liv, from his mother’s side. He also apparently has 2 step-brothers on his father’s side.

In 2016, he apparently started dating Spanish model Irina Isasia. Rubius has often spoken about online bullying and has resolved to take steps to prevent it in future.
