Early Life

David Spencer was a very grumpy teenager who didn't enjoy school, because of which he was nicknamed "squidward" by his college friends after the character from Spongebob Squarepants. He eventually dropped out of college.

Career

David Spencer joined YouTube on March 10, 2011, and created the channel iBallisticSquid by combining his nickname "squidward" with his favorite ballistic knife from the Call Of Duty game. His first video on the channel, posted on June 17, 2012, was on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim titled Skyrim, Meet My Pet Dragon. He subsequently made a few videos featuring games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Call of Duty: Black Ops before moving on to Minecraft. Although he initially didn’t like Minecraft, he was harassed by his college friends to play it and was completely hooked after a few hours. After dropping out of college, he sent messages for collaboration to five other Xbox live users who played Minecraft, among whom only one, Joseph Garrett aka Stampylonghead, responded. The two started making Minecraft videos on YouTube to boost each other’s views and subscribers count.

He made his first vlog on Jul 28, 2012 after reaching 100 subscribers and also announced a Minecraft competition. His videos on Minecraft showcasing mods and challenges were very popular among his viewers, and helped him in becoming one of the early YouTube millionaires in April 2014. At the peak of his popularity, he launched his own iOS game called Keepy Ducky. His channel started to struggle in the latter part of the decade as Minecraft videos waned in popularity, which reportedly prompted him to pursue property business. He also had to be less frequent on the channel after the birth of his son, which he discussed in the video, The Downfall Of iBallisticSquid, on January 9, 2023. While he announced that he was back on the platform, he also admitted that he would stick to his old video style instead of embracing the current trend of short and snappy videos.
