Chunkz is the online alias of first generation British Somali YouTuber, host, entertainer and former musician Amin Mohamed who gained fame for uploading funny videos and rap battles on his Chunkz channel. Following an appearance on Big Shaq’s Man’s Not Hot music video, he had launched his music career and also formed a duo with fellow YouTuber Yung Filly, but he left music in 2021 due to conflicts with his faith.
Early Life
Chunkz, following in the footsteps of his three sisters, who all had graduated from university, was studying financial math at London Metropolitan University before he decided to drop out in 2016 to focus on YouTube.
Career
Chunkz started out filming videos in 2015 with his cousin and fellow YouTuber Darkest Man. He joined YouTube on July 23, 2015 and began uploading videos about the FIFA video game series with Victim of the week: Chunkz v Abdallah in August. After several videos about the game, he started posting vlogs, challenges, pranks, epic rap battles, Q&A’s and more alongside his friend Sharky and Darkest Man. However, it is his series like Cooking with Chunkz, where he taught his friends how to make laughably basic meals, got him noticed initially in 2017. The same year, he made an appearance in Big Shaq’s viral spoof music video Man’s Not Hot which raised his popularity even more.
In March 2018, he and Michael Dapaah helped launch a voice app built for the Google Assistant for the train ticket retailer Trainline. That year, he won the International Somaliland award for best entertainer. He became a part of the collaborative YouTube group the Beta Squad along with four YouTubers: Sharky, Aj Shabeel, KingKennyTv and Niko Omilana. He also formed a duo with Yung Filly and contributed funny content to other YouTube channels like Footasylum and Pro:Direct Soccer. He further bagged a record deal and released his first rap single Clean Up with Yung Filly in March 2020. It was followed by a new single and music video titled Hold.
He was named the co-host of the Sky Sports Saturday morning show Saturday Social in September 2020, the same month when he was also announced as a co-host for the extreme sports competition the Aphetor Games. In December, he hosted the 2020 MOBO Awards with Maya Jama. An Arsenal supporter, he has appeared in the Amazon Original sports docuseries All or Nothing: Arsenal. He has also participated annually in the charity football event Soccer Aid since 2020. When he had started out, a more experienced YouTuber had given him one rule to follow: “don’t get involved in politics”. However, as a Somali and a Muslim, he feels that as his popularity grew, more “responsibility fell into [his] lap”.
Family Life
Chunkz, born as Amin Mohamed, is the youngest of five siblings born to parents who emigrated from Somalia in the late 1980s. Chunkz, a Muslim, left his burgeoning music career in May 2021 stating that he believed it was incompatible with his religious beliefs.
